Our day doesn’t begin in the morning, it begins the night before. If you’ve had a bad night, it is very unlikely that you’re going to have a pleasant next day. This is why it’s important you do all the right things before going to bed.
You need to do things that will help you sleep well so that you can wake up energized the next day. There’s no point in having a morning routine if you don’t have a night routine for the previous day.
Try doing these 7 simple things before you go to bed every night.
Pour Your Head and Heart Out
There’s an old saying: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” You cannot conquer the world if you’re tired all the time.
Similarly, you can’t completely relax until you stop overthinking. If you have thoughts, ideas and words going on your mind over and over again, you will find it difficult to relax.
Before going to bed, spend some time to go over your day. You can do this by:
Journalling your thoughts is a great way to do this. Just sit down with a blank notebook and write down whatever you’re thinking about.
Have a chat with a loved one and share your feelings with them.
Meditating for a few minutes before going to bed.
My favorite is the first one. I have kept a diary to write down my thoughts for years. I often read my old journal and see how much I’ve grown up as a person.
Have A Night Routine
Having a routine makes it easy to relax. Your routine can be a simple few steps. For example, here’s my routine:
I wash my face and then use a moisturiser.
I sit down to write in my journal.
I listen to calm music for a few minutes.
I go to sleep.
This is a simple routine and works well for me. You can make a longer or shorter routine according to your lifestyle.
Stop Midnight Snacking
I have seen people who binge-watch Netflix at night and while there’s nothing wrong with that, there are some people who mindlessly eat snacks while binge-watching. If you often find yourself mindlessly gulping down food just because you’re bored, you should be more mindful of your eating habits.
Your body needs rest at night and it won’t be able to relax if it’s busy digesting all the junk food that you’re eating.
If you do feel hungry at night, grab a healthy snack instead. Or you can even go for a heavier dinner so that you don’t feel hungry late in the night.
Talk To Your Loved Ones
You can be successful and rich but if you’re not spending enough time with your loved ones, your happiness can be incomplete. Talking to your loved ones at night time is a great idea because almost everyone is free at that time. People don’t have jobs to do or errands to run.
This is a great way to spend your time instead of endlessly scrolling through your social media. Talking to our loved ones also helps us take our mind off our problems and instead focus on the positive instead.
Accept That Tomorrow Will Be a New Day
No matter how your day went, tomorrow will be a new day with new opportunities. If you had a bad day, you can try again the next day to make it a better one. If you had a good day, you can have a good day tomorrow again.
Before bed, know that you did all you could do today. Tomorrow’s sunrise will bring forth new opportunities for you to conquer the world.
Avoid Social Media Right Before Bed
It’s tempting, I know. I am guilty of spending all my time watching TikTok and Instagram Reels at night too. However, I am trying to control this one because I don’t notice when the hours pass by and I go to sleep really late. This makes me up tired and groggy the next day and ruins my day even before it begins.
It’s easy to get disturbed at night if you’re spending your time on social media. Someone’s comments might make you angry or you might find yourself comparing your life to someone else’s. It’s difficult to sleep peacefully after that.
Spend as much time as you want on your social media accounts but make sure you stop doing it at least an hour before bedtime. You can read a book or listen to a podcast instead.
Your bedtime is sacred and it’s time you start treating it like that. I am sure once you start doing these things, you’ll notice a significant change in your life. You’ll feel more productive throughout the day just by following these simple steps.
