Why Hobbies Are More Important Than Side Hustles

I am tired of hearing about side hustles. Every day I am surrounded by people telling me that I should be more productive and do more things with my time. But I don’t hear enough about people doing things simply because they enjoy doing them. It’s like if I am not doing something to earn money, I am wasting my life.

This is stupid. Yes, earning money is important in the kind of world we live in. Without money, we can’t survive. But it’s making people forget about the real reason we earn money: to enjoy life!

This is why I believe hobbies are much more important than side hustles.

Hobbies are essential for self-improvement

With mental health illnesses on the rise, hobbies are more important than ever. They give us time to breathe and relax. After a long hard day at work, you need a break so that you are recharged for the next day. You don’t want to come home after a long day at work to do some more work.

If you want to be more productive, you shouldn’t work more. You should be learning how to do more focused work. And you can only focus better when you’re relaxed.

Hobbies give you the time to be with yourself. It’s your own personal time that you are not spending thinking about your business deal or your boss. It’s your time where you get to be selfish and not care about anything else. The more you take care of yourself, the better your health is.

Side-hustles are exhausting

Side hustles require hard work. There is no such thing as a passive income. Often side hustles can take up as much time as a regular job. With side hustles, you are always worried about your success and you can’t completely enjoy the process.

Having a successful side hustle requires commitment. You need to learn new skills and network with people in your field. It can be extremely stressful to put so much time and hard work into something and not see the results you were expecting. So there’s always a fear of failure in the back of your mind. The fear of your hard work not converting into good results can affect your ability to grow.

You will never be satisfied with your success in your side hustle. When you gain 100 followers, you will want 1000. When you earn $100, you will want $1000. The constant chase will do you more harm than good. As soon as money is involved, you start to worry about how to scale your business or how to file your income taxes with this additional income.

If you’re going to continue overworking yourself, you will eventually burn out. Not only will you fail at your side hustle, but you will also fail at your main job.

On the other hand, hobbies allow you to be silly. You are not worried about your return on investment and you can completely fail at them without any consequences. You don’t have a hobby because you want to be the world champion, you simply do it because it brings you joy. Hobbies allow you to make art not just content.

Hobbies don’t require you to be a perfectionist, you can be a complete mess and still enjoy the process. With hobbies, you are not afraid to fail. You can paint poorly but that’s okay because you still got to relax and play with colors.

A hobby is what makes your life worth living

Hobbies eliminate the need to hurry. Repetitive hobbies such as embroidery, knitting, pottery can teach you the importance of being patient. The repetitive movements allow you to be more present in the current moment. Such hobbies are therapeutic. By focusing on the hobby at hand, you forget all about your anxieties and problems.

Discipline is something that is appreciated in almost any field of work. A hobby helps you be more disciplined. Finishing a painting or writing a book requires you to show up every day. Such hobbies can help you become consistent and disciplined in your pursuits which are important for success.

Working all the time and thinking about earning more money can drain your creativity well. When you’re empty from inside, you won’t be able to think of innovative ideas. The best ideas come to you when you are not actively looking for them which is why you need to spend some time away from work.

A hobby can also help you strengthen your relationship with a loved one.

There are many hobbies which you can do with a partner that allows you to spend some quality time with your friends and family.

3 Hobbies That Anyone Can Try

Having a hobby doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as going for a walk in a park nearby or bird watching. If you’re still confused, here are three hobbies that anyone can try.

  1. Gardening: You don’t need to have a huge space for cultivating a garden, just taking care of a small plant can teach you a lot about responsibility. Taking care of a pet is a big commitment but taking care of a plant is far easier.

  2. Painting: Almost everyone learns to paint when they are a child. Not because they’re trying to sell their painting for money but because painting is fun. If you don’t want to paint, you can even buy those coloring books for adults. It can be very relaxing.

  3. Journaling: I am not talking about bullet journaling where you make plans for your week ahead. I am talking about traditional journaling where you sit down with a pen and paper to write down your thoughts. It’s one of the best ways to learn more about yourself.

You need to spend some time where you are not thinking about being productive or making more money. You should enjoy your life because that’s exactly what you’re meant to do.

With all that being said, I am not against you having a side hustle in every case. If you can, you should have a main job, a hobby, and a side hustle. But if you have to give up one thing among these three, I’d suggest giving up the side hustle in the favor of your hobby.

Because remember, we don’t live to earn money. We live to be happy.
